The furnishings of the average bedroom are fairly universal: a bed, probably a nightstand, a lamp, chair, and rug. But what about plants? Few bedrooms contain them—and that could be a mistake. Plants can improve the quality of the air in your sleep environment, while also encouraging sleep by reducing stress and improving calmness. If you are considering adding some flora or fauna to your room, these picks are a good place to start.
Snake Plant (also called Mother-in-Law’s Tongue)
This tall plant acts as an exceptional air purifier, removing four out of five common toxins. It also converts carbon dioxide into oxygen at night.
The scent of lavender has been shown to reduce stress and improve sleep quality, even in people who suffer from insomnia. Heading to bed with the smell of lavender in the air may also help you to feel more awake the next day. You can learn more about the health benefits of Lavender in our other blog post.
Similar to lavender, the smell of this plant helps people achieve sounder shut-eye, spend fewer minutes tossing and turning, and wake up feeling less anxious.
Herbal supplements made from the root of the Valerian plant have been used as a sleep aid, but it turns out you don’t have to take a pill to see a benefit. Promising research shows that simply smelling Valerian can help you sleep longer.
If allergies or asthma make it tough for you to get quality sleep, this plant can help. Researchers from NASA found that it’s great at removing irritants like benzene and formaldehyde from the air.
Which of these plants would you like to put in your room? Or maybe you have a different kind of plant in there already? Please share with us.
